Today has not been a good day. My baby, Kirby, woke for a potty run about 4:45 this morning. Not unusual as far as time goes. Anyway, she and Cosmo took care of business, but the pit bull that lives next door was unchained and came over. He's kept his distance the other times he's been unchained, but this time he came right up to the guys. I didn't really think anything of it other than I still needed to get my guys inside, when the other dog just attacked Kirby. I started screaming and hitting the attacking dog with anything I could get my hands on, but it didn't do any good. I even got a sort of bite myself. Didn't really break the skin, but it's scratched and there is a bruise. I called 911. Luckily for Kirby, but not for Cosmo, the dog left Kirby alone and went for Cosmo. That was about the time the police arrived. I was able to get Kirby inside and by the time I got back outside, the police got the other dog off Cosmo. Cosmo was able to walk and came inside. He wasn't hurt too badly although there was some bleeding and he's favoring his left rear leg. I got Kirby to the Animal Emergency Clinic. The doctor said she was really shocky and her blood pressure when she got there was 54. Her pupils were unequal and unresponsive, she only had reflex motion in one of her legs. They were able to get her blood pressure up to 90 by the time they moved her to the surgery clinic upstairs.
The doctor I spoke to upstairs said that all those signs could be a result of the shock and they would need to get her stable before they could clean her up and assess the extent of the wounds. This was around 8 o'clock this morning. I heard from the doctor around 11:45 that they were able to get her stable enough to clean her up and treat the wounds. I spoke to another doctor this evening and she was resting comfortably and on a wide range of antibiotics to stave off infection and narcotics. She was cautiously optimistic about Kirby's chances. It's still too early to say for certain what her prognosis is, they have to wait for the swelling to go down and see if there is any damage to her larynx because there is air in her chest cavity that the doctor thinks is from the puncture wounds interfered with the X-ray of her throat. They will check and see how she eats and drinks tomorrow since that wasn't really a priority for her today. The doctor said it didn't look like they would need to do a lot of surgery, but again they won't know for sure until the swelling goes down. They will call in the morning to give me an update unless something bad happens tonight. I'm hoping and praying I don't hear anything until the morning.
I'm going to have to make more of an effort to post good things instead of bad. Friday Night Live went really well last Friday.
