I have a very dear friend who is lousy at keeping track of dates and things. She gets season tickets to the Alley and I go with her. In her defense, she did change the dates for all the tickets this season.

Yesterday in the middle of work, I get a very short phone call from her. We had tickets for the performance of "Be My Baby" last night. A world premiere no less with Hal Holbrook and Dixie Carter in the leads with the other four cast members filled out with Alley actors. One of them is based out of LA now and came back just to do the show. Interesting premise - Holbrook and Carter go to the States in 1963 to pick up a baby to be adopted by a couple in Scotland, fall madly in love with the baby and want to adopt her themselves, even though it will mean getting married to each other. Their characters do the "you irritate me silly but that's only to cover up that I like you a whole lot" routine.

The set design was really neat. There were set pieces that moved in and out to establish location and a shifting backdrop with Scotland and San Francisco for establishing scenes as well. My favorite part though was the proscenium dressing. Oversized toys that would be found in a nursery. Alphabet blocks, trains, a huge pacifier, crayons, a toy plane and cruise ship that lit up when the scenes took place on a plane or ship. There were also electricals that looked like flowers and ladybugs.

Two of the cast members played everyone but the leads and the adopting couple. Quite a breakneck pace on some of the scene/costume changes. There was a talk back session after the show, but Holbrook and Carter weren't able to stay and several people left which I thought was uncool. Of course, I'm also a fan of the Alley company, so I was just as pleased to hear them. After the talk back, as we were heading to the car park, who comes out the stage door but Dixie Carter. My friend started to make a bee line for her, but changed direction at almost the same time. No need to bother her and it was getting late for everyone.
